  This week I believe my overall perspective of Inquiry Based Learning has truly grown. Understanding Backwards Design was some I have a strong background in creating lessons/units based off of the end in mind rather than the beginning. I was also glad to have the opportunity to dig deeper into the 5Es. I was also able to investigate Web 2.0 tools that would benefit my students in the classroom and relate those tools to the 5Es and how to formally assess my students using those tools. There were a lot of opportunities for learning new tools and tactics through the help of my colleagues. I think this course truly has been one of the most beneficial courses I have ever taken. 

For any burning questions I would like some tips on how to handle students that truly struggle to learn on their own. With inquiry based learning the teacher is placing a huge responsibility on the students and if a student or students have not had opportunities like this in their previous classes it may be difficult for those students to learn in this way. How do you address students who are struggling to learn on their own?

What caught my attention during this week's readings and assignments is that inquiry can take on a variety of forms in the classroom and that there is no ONE right way to teach inquiry. I like that the reading referred to it as a "fluid continuum." Approaching inquiry based learning with the approach that you can fluidly slide from one spot to another is a helpful approach. As long as the chosen approach corresponds with your learning objects and student's needs, that's what's important. I also really liked the characteristics of each type of inquiry in relation to teacher, student and teacher-student directed inquiry. It was nicely outlined and made me really understand what each approach looks like in the classroom.

Final Thoughts

  Inquiry based learning is an adventure. It gives the reigns to the students and takes the traditional role of the teacher out of the classroom. The teacher becomes a facilitator of learning which is a very important role.  The teacher needs to keep pushing for more and asking students to  investigate  their thoughts and concerns on the  content . Students will have a guide, but be will be set free to learn on their own. They take ownership of their learning, set goals and become the center of their learning. I've learned that it is okay to allow the students the class time to investigate. The teacher does not need to be the only one providing information. Students have the power to do this and to be the resource for others in the room. I have  definitely  become more comfortable with allowing my students to take on this responsibility.
